by her scream.
"Kira! Kira!" he shook her.
Kira instantly awoke gasping for air. Beads of sweat
covered her delicate brow and tears streamed freely down her
cheeks.
Rowan gathered her into his arms and held her tightly. She
was shivering as if a great chill had descended upon her.
Rowan heard heavy footsteps then banging on the door to
their chamber.
"My lord! Rowan! Are you alright?" Angus's voice sounded
from the other side of the barrier.
"'Twas only a dream, Angus, we are fine!" Rowan called
out, holding Kira more closely against him.
He heard Angus retreat back down to the great hall. The
whole castle must have heard her scream.
"It is all right, my love. I am here. I will not let anything
harm you," Rowan was whispering, trying to calm her down.
She held onto him, not wanting to let him go. The fear of her
dream was subsiding somewhat, but the feeling of dread still
encircled her trembling body.
"Are you feeling better?"
She nodded and snuggled closer to him. The warmth of his
arms making the shadows glide back into oblivion.
"You want to tell me about it?"
"All I remember is running down a narrow passageway. It
was lit by torches and it was damp. There was something in
the shadows behind me. It was following me just out of my

eye sight. I felt that the babe was in trouble. I had to
protect..."
"Babe? What babe?" Rowan asked as he looked down at
her.
Kira smiled warmly and rose up to look at his face. She put
her small hand against his cheek and caressed him as she
continued.
"I carry your babe, Rowan of Locks Glen. Your long
awaited heir shall soon be in our midst."
Rowan gasped with surprise. But it was so soon. If this
were true, at long last, the line would be continued!
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. When I went to the village, it was to seek out Meeka,
the Ancient One. She confirmed what I had suspicions of."
"A babe!" Rowan was thrilled. He drew Kira back into his
arms and kissed her soundly. A great weight had just lifted
from his shoulders. Now the Dragon Lord line would flourish.
His heart was full with joy. But now the realization of her
dream slammed him hard into the chest.
The danger to the babe and Kira was now even more
prominent.
Now more than ever he must find a way to protect his
family from harm. But that could wait until morning. Right
now all he wanted to do was make love to his wife and revel
in the fact that he was to become a father. A fact that he had
long ago thought he would never enjoy.

Chapter Twenty-Nine
"Why wasn't she taken when you had the chance?" Harper
was ranting as he paced angrily back and forth in his solar.
Griffin stood still as his lord ranted. He too was filled with
anger that his men did not retrieve the luscious Lady Kira. His
men had been watching the Dragon Lords keep for over a
month now and the one time he was not there to over see his
men, they had let her slip, not once, but twice through their
greasy fingers.
"I am just as angry as you are my lord! But perhaps there
will be another chance she can be taken." Griffin spoke
quickly, trying to cool Harper's temper. He knew from
experience how that hot head could do damage. He still bore
the scar from Harper's last tirade. One day Harper would pay
for that treachery.
"Bah! Time is slipping past and we must get her away from
Rowan's protection! Soon the window of opportunity will pass
and she will be useless to me." Harper paced erratically past
his desk. There had to be a way of getting the Lady Kira from
her over protective husband and past that noisy wizard's
gaze. He had plans for Kira that did not include what the
wizard had plans for.
It had been against his better judgment to involve Talyn in
this business any way. If he hadn't of needed the wizard's
incantations and sorcery to help him kill Rowan, he would
have slain the wizard himself. As it was, it seemed as though
every attempt made by the wizard to bring about Rowan's

demise always failed. He was starting to wonder if Talyn had
any power at all.
Nay, he knew the wizard was plenty powerful. He had seen
this with his own eyes. No, Talyn had his own agenda which
was interfering with Harper's own plans. In fact, he had just
learned from the High King that Talyn's daughter was his own
personal healer. Harper hadn't even known the wizard had a
daughter! That in itself was enough to seal the wizard's fate.
No one kept anything from him. After all, he was lord and
master of his lands, which meant he owned everything and
everyone on them.
He had given Talyn false hope of obtaining the land he was
ensconced in anyway. It had been originally part of his
mother's dowry, but she had given it to Harper on his
sixteenth birthday. It had lain in ruin for many years until
Talyn had come to him and offered his services in exchange
for the land and its castle. The surrounding village barely
eeked out a living strong enough to contain itself let alone an
overlord, but the offer had intrigued him. So Harper had
agreed, but now, to his way of thinking, Talyn had withheld
vital information from him so now the deal was off.
Yes, he would make Talyn pay dearly for his deceit. The
wizard's daughter should make a very nice compensation. He
was sure the High King would get over the loss of his healer.
Once Harper was through with her, she would be worthless to
anyone.
Griffin watched the play of emotions fill Harper's features. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
